In the beginning of the daily fourth session there will be teachings on the sadhana and the quality of Medicine Buddha. \n\n\n\nSickness is a common suffering of all living beings. However\, according to Tibetan medicine\, most illnesses are psychosomatic and\, according to Buddhism\, many types of mental and physical illnesses are actually generated largely by one’s unwholesome attitude\, and cannot be cured by conventional medicine alone; on the other side\, there’s a connection between wholesome thoughts\, your health and happiness. The Buddha taught a form of meditation for people suffering from diseases by using a practice of a sacred mantra and meditation based on Medicine Buddha. It examines the nature of reality\, the mind\, and mental phenomena\, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of the nature of reality. Its profound insights into the workings of consciousness and the essence of existence\, provide a comprehensive framework for understanding Buddhist psychology and philosophy across all three vehicles or yanas. \n\n\n\nIn this course\, His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin will focus on the Treasury of Abhidharma or Abhidharmakośa\, authored by Vasubandhu\, a prominent Indian Buddhist scholar and master from the 4th or 5th century. Abhidharmakośa\, considered one of the thirteen great texts utilized as the core curriculum in most traditional Tibetan Buddhist centers for teaching or shedras\, serves as a seminal work in the Mahayana tradition. It provides a structured overview of Abhidharma teachings and is extensively studied by all Tibetan traditions. \n\n\n\nThe vast teachings of Abhidharma and Buddhist psychology provide a path to a clear and deep view of the nature of reality\, bringing us closer to understanding our minds and freeing ourselves from suffering. Sutras in which Gautama Buddha expounds the glories of Sukhavati\, the Pure Lands\, sometimes refer to the presiding Buddha as Amitabha and sometimes as Amitayus. As Amitayus\, he is depicted in fine clothes and jewellery and as Amitabha in simple monk’s clothes. In Chinese and Japanese tradition\, they are also known as Amida. \n\n\n\nThe name Amitayus is the name for the Sambhogakaya aspect of Amitabha and is particularly associated with long life. He is usually depicted seated with a vase containing the nectar of immortality in his hands. In Tibetan Buddhism\, Amitayus is also one of the three deities of long life (Amitayus\, White Tara and Ushnishavijaya). These teachings were later grouped together into three classes of teachings referred to as the Three Turnings of the Dharma Wheel\, each turning revealing another essential dimension of the path. In the summer seminars over the course of the next three years (2022-2024)\, we will discuss each of these classes of teachings in turn.  \n\n\n\n2022: The Three Turnings of the Dharma Wheel\, part 1: Freedom from Samsara \n\n\n\nIn the First Turning of the Dharma Wheel\, the main topic of the Buddha’s teaching is the Four Noble Truths. This teaching is the foundation for the entire system of Buddhist thought and practice of all traditions and lineages. In this seminar\, the discussion of this topic will be supported by a reading of the Sutra of the Turning of the Dharma Wheel and explore important related aspects of the Abhidharma teachings. \n\n\n\n2023: The Three Turnings of the Dharma Wheel\, part 2: The Absence of Characteristics \n\n\n\nThe special topic of the Second Turning of the Dharma Wheel is the profound wisdom of emptiness. This was expounded at great length in the Perfection of Wisdoms Sūtras and later commented upon by many great masters\, most notably Ārya Nāgārjuna and the teachers of the Madhyamaka school. \n\n\n\nIn this seminar we will explore the notion of reality as taught in the Sūtra of Perfection of Wisdom. Our study of the ‘Heart Sūtra’ will be based on a commentary by a great Sakya master\, Rongton Sheja Kunrig\, and accompanied by an introduction to the middle way school (Madhyamaka). \n\n\n\n2024: The Three Turnings of the Dharma Wheel\, part 3: Luminous Mind and the Three Natures \n\n\n\nIn the Third Turning of the Dharma Wheel\, the Buddha taught what is known as the definitive meaning of his teachings. In this class of teachings\, the Buddha revealed extraordinary teachings on the mind\, buddha nature and profound ways to understand conventional and ultimate reality\, in this way complementing the earlier teachings. The exploration of this topic will be supported by readings from the Sūtra on Buddha Nature\, the Sūtra on the Descent into Lanka\, and the Sūtra Unraveling the Intent. \n\n\n\nChristian Bernert \n\n\n\nOf Franco-Austrian background\, Christian grew up in Vienna and lived for about five years in Kathmandu. His connection with the Buddhadharma was formally forged in 1999 under the guidance of his first teacher\, the late Khenchen Sherab Gyaltsen Amipa Rinpoche. He received an MA in religious studies and Tibetology from the University of Vienna in 2009\, followed by a two-year translator training at the International Buddhist Academy (IBA) in Kathmandu\, where he had participated in yearly summer programs since its inception in 2001. A founding member of the Chödung Karmo Translation Group\, the vision of which is the translation of important works of the Sakya tradition\, he continues to work closely with IBA. He currently coordinates for IBA The Complete Path program with His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin Ratna Vajra\, a seven-year course on the core theory and practice of the Sakya lineage. In 2021 he joined the in-house translators team of the Khyentse Vision Project\, the mission of which is the translation of the collected works of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.   \n\n\n\nChristian has published translations of classical Tibetan texts on Buddhist thought and practice\, as well as teachings of contemporary masters. His publications include Words of a Gentle Sage: Collected Teachings of Khenchen Appey Rinpoche\, Vol. 1 (2018)\, Adorning Maitreya’s Intent: A Commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga by Rongtön Sheja Kunrik (2017)\, and various sūtras for 84000. \n\n\n\nChristian currently lives in Hoi An\, Vietnam. We often find ourselves overwhelmed by strong emotions\, anxieties\, fears\, obsessions\, desires\, hopes\, sadness\, disorders\, difficulties\, and so on. There are various ways to deal with these mental states\, which we here call “demons\,” and the ancient Tibetan science of the mind offers us extremely effective methods that allow us to work with them from different angles.  \n\n\n\nIt is primarily important to know one’s mental structures and the mechanisms that induce disturbed states\, and secondarily learn to use the various emotions in the most constructive way. Demons can destroy us but can also lead us to a very deep understanding of ourselves and consequently to a state of deep peace and awareness. \n\n\n\nThe journey towards the knowledge of our most sacred and profound nature necessarily involves confronting one’s own shadows. The great Tibetan Yogini Machig Labdron\, as early as 1200 A.D.\, developed a unique system of spiritual practice that is based primarily on encountering one’s own demons and has inspired generations of meditators to this day.
